Working with the street children of Sihanoukville, Cambodia
Drugs Use and Harm Reduction
Drug use is often a way to suppress negative feelings, painful past and current experiences, hunger and difficult family situations. Drugs commonly used with these Cambodian youth include inhalants (glue) and methamphetamines which are both widely available and inexpensive.
M'Lop Tapang's Drugs Team regularly works with known drug using youth throughout the Sihanoukville area on the streets and on the beaches. The team also provides preventative education to the general community about the dangers of using drugs. We also work with young offenders currently incarcerated in the local prison with a known history of drug abuse and offer relapse prevention services.
Our 24-hour Drop-in Center for youth 'at risk' or dependent on substances is a safe drug free place that offers daily access to hot nutritious meals, shower facilities, sports and counseling.
